RoHS, or Restriction of Hazardous Substances, is an EU directive that governs the use of harmful substances in electrical and electronic equipment to mitigate environmental and health risks. The primary objective of this directive is to limit specific hazardous materials to designated maximum concentrations.

  • Cadmium (0.01%)

  • Lead (0.1%)

  • Mercury (0.1%)

  • Hexavalent chromium (0.1%)

  • Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) (0.1%)

  • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) (0.1%)

  • Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) (0.1%)

  • Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) (0.1%)

  • Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) (0.1%)

  • Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) (0.1%)

RoHS compliance can be demonstrated in two ways

  1. Testing and measurement of each individual homogeneous material.
  2. Assessment in accordance with the harmonised standard EN IEC 63000:2018, which necessitates comprehensive documentation and thorough control of materials and components.

RoHS testing is primarily conducted through two methods.

  • XRF-screening: Quick, cost effective and non-destructive, but less accurate than wet chemical testing. Can identify chromium, but not separate heksavalent chromium from other chromium species.
  • Wet chemical testing (ICP): More accurate, but time consuming and destructive. Higher costs.

Nemko Norlab provides both XRF screening and wet chemical testing, along with assistance in establishing or evaluating substance control systems in accordance with the RoHS Directive and the EN IEC 63000 standard. Our aim is to ensure that manufacturers and suppliers comply with European and international regulations in a straightforward and efficient manner.
